In preparation for hiring a designer, it’s time for me to decide on a new cover concept for my self-published version of The Jaguar Legacy, a paranormal romantic suspense set in Mexican jungles. I want a cover that will attract readers’ attention, and have two possibilities in mind:
- Fun & Sexy: Visualize a hunky archaeologist (bare chested and wearing an Indiana Jones hat, face partially hidden), leaning against an ancient stone pillar, with a jaguar face snarling from the jungle behind him;
or - Subtle/Artistic: Visualize a purple sky at sunset fading into oranges and pinks towards the horizon, the hazy face of a jaguar (eyes a prominent feature) against the sky, an ancient Mexican temple in the mid-ground, with the silhouette of an embracing couple somewhere on the page (to show that it is a romance).
Which do you think will sell more books? Fun & Sexy, Subtle/Artistic, or another idea?
Unless it’s of the sweet variety (and I don’t think it is from hearing you describe it!), I say go with the sexy version. I also think the jaguar gives it the edginess it needs to say ‘suspense’, so you’re really nailing it with your idea, Maureen. Can’t wait to see the cover!
Thanks for the input, Linda. You’re right. I wouldn’t call Jaguar Legacy a ‘sweet’ romance. It has some heat.
Personally, I think Fun & Sexy would be my choice. I know well the difficulty in reaching a decision on a book cover! Went through that recently myself.
Wishing you all the best,
Chloe
Thanks Chloe. I’m leaning that way too. I checked out your covers on Amazon. I particularly liked the one for Entering the Age of Elegance. I hope it brings lots of sales.
