She stretched fear-stiffened lips into a jaunty grin and faced her captors. “You won’t shoot me,” she stated, infusing her voice with a certainty she wished was genuine.
He merely poked the gun into her ribs hard enough to puncture a lung.
She fought back terror, raw and jagged as a spear of lightning, and focused all her attention on the woman. “I’m safe until we’re at sea, and I’ll tell you why.”
